Thuppaki Music Review

Harris Jayaraj started this year with Vijay's Nanban and now wraps up with Thuppakki. This year Harris delivers a total of 4 movie releases this year. All of them have been commercial movies and catered towards meeting the expectations of the mass market demands. Thuppakki is no different from his recent albums in that regard. Most of the songs in Thuppakki seem to be composed with focus on highlighting Vijay's lightning fast dance moves.

On that note, let's get into the review of Thuppakki album comprised of 1 intro song, 3 dance numbers, 1 love duet and 1 patriotic number + 1 theme music to fulfill this album.

Kutti Puli Koottam
The song sung by Hariharan is expected to be Vijay's introduction song with dancers performing in Mumbai setting. The tempo of the song is slower than what one would expect to see in typical Vijay intro song. Harris' melody infusion works well in providing scope for repeat hearing. The second charanam stanza "யுவதிகள் தேடி அவதிகள் கோடி இருந்தும் அதில்தான் சுகமெலாம்" by Viveka stands out in otherwise average lyrics mixed with random words in English, Hindi and "ding dings".

Antarctica
Icy smooth number sung by Vijay Prakash and Krissh. The song does the part well in praising the ethereal nature of the heroine. Karky's lyrics interestingly touch upon the inability of radar and sonar to measure the depth and state of love. Harris' music in this song is steadily paced with limited musical variations in orchestration. This song feels shorter than others as it breeze through.

Poi Varuva
This is a song dedicated to army jawans protecting our country. Pa. Vijay's wonderful lyrics pay rich tributes to the soldiers who place their life on the line of fire. This solo sung unhurriedly by Karthik and soul stirring humming by Chinmayee adds depth to this song. The guitar chords and singing in the song may remind "Give me sunshine" track. This song is expected to be situational in the movie. So, be prepared for Vijay's patriotic performance to move you on the big screen.

Google Google - VJ on the Floor
This is easily the pick of the album with everything working perfectly well in unison. The highlight is of course ilayathalapathy Vijay, who has belt out the song with his effortless rendition and cutely complemented by Andrea Jeremiah. The song has electronica trance track and specially designed for fast dance moves on the floor. Karky infuses coolness and fun characteristics of the hero. As always, Karky weaves contemporary topics without negatively impacting the song. Chartbuster!

Vennilave
Harris' signature melody love duet sung by Bombay Jayashri and Hariharan. The music instruments have strong south Indian tradition music with mridangam, gatam interspersed with flute. The song will catch on with repeated hearings and with picturization.

Alaika Laikaa
Stylistically, this song is similar to Antartica and Google songs composed with sole intention to highlight Vijay's prowess in dancing. The song has heavier club beats with Javed Ali and Sayanora powering through the song. Pa. Vijay's has penned this song.

Lastly, the theme music blends well with heavy metal rock which is already made popular in the teaser. As always, there will be certain section of fans who will quickly dismiss this music album as "same old" stuff in just another new bottle. On the other end, there will be critics who will praise it to the sky just so they play to the gallery. We feel this album is somewhere in between the two extreme ends of the opinions.

Thuppakki is listen-worthy and shows good potential to work better with Vijay's presence and dance moves.

Rating - 6.5/10
